rules are made to be broken refers to this: a basic rule in chess is that when you have a spacial advantage, you don't want to trade pieces, because that gives your opponent more room to move his pieces. So I have a feeling you were following that rule, when in fact it was one of the rare times that rule should have been ignored.....I thought it was kind of interesting in light of everything you told me.
